Trump doesn’t have the authority either to eliminate or to defund the Department of Education. The Constitution gives that authority only to Congress.

A 2/3 House vote would be needed to eliminate the DOE, which isn’t going to happen with the House split 50/50 between Republicans and Democrats. So this is just more political theater.

Trump falsely stated that education will go back to the states. Education has ALWAYS been run by the states.

The DOE provides funding to states for federal programs like Pell grants and special needs programs. It also monitors national education statistics and runs our very large student loan program.

Given the cuts in staff that Trump is proposing, it would be impossible for the DOE to continue to perform those functions. They would NOT be continued as he falsely claims.

One in four adults under age 40 currently has a student loan. The proposed staffing cuts would throw administration of the loans program into complete disarray.

This article is full of partisan opinions presented as facts. To begin, the DOE only provides 10% of K-12 funding; states control the rest. Consequently, the claim that the federal govt controls the curriculum of elementary, middle, and high schools is false.

In fact, most public school curricula are determined almost entirely by local school boards and community parents within the structure of state funding with minimal federal input.

Consequently, the generalization that DOE is somehow responsible for leftist indoctrination in K-12 schools is baseless. Schools reflect the attitudes of their local communities.

However, DOE does provide critical funding to K-12 for teaching students with special needs and as well as funding special programs not usually affordable by local communities.

Without that funding, those children would learn poorly if at all. Every parent with a neurodivergent or physically handicapped child values those programs greatly.

In addition, the claim that teachers are overpaid is objectively untrue. Teaching requires years of schooling, practical experience, state certification, and continuous education.

Most teachers supervise extracurricular activities and bring paperwork home evenings and weekends. Their salaries are average, not unusually high. The primary draw of these positions is the benefits and the academic calendar schedule.

There is no more important task than educating America’s youth. The DOE’s primary tasks are helping to fund higher education through college grants and administering the student loan program.

One in four Americans under age 40 has a student loan — on average $25,000. The federal govt supplies loans at much lower interest rates than banks. Prior to govt loans, many students were locked into such high interest bank loans that it took them decades to repay them.

The 2024 DOE budget was $305B, which is 4.5% of the total federal budget. If DOE staffing is cut in half, there is no way DOE can properly administer the large student loan program, a program that is essential for millions of American students to complete their studies.

This is a rhetorical discussion because the president doesn’t have the Constitutional authority to create or eliminate federal departments. The Constitution only empowers Congress to do that.

But it’s important that we all understand how the Departments of our federal govt work. I, like every other American, want our govt to run efficiently with minimal waste. But I want to be certain our govt strikes a balance between careful spending and sufficient provision of essential services.
